About Ms. Henderson
Recent accomplishments include the Grand Award at the 7th Annual Celebration of Western Art in San Francisco, 1st place painting at the Cherokee Heritage Center Museum, two K. Henderson paintings were chosen for the prestigious Salon International Art Show, she participated in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd annual Cowgirl Up! Show & Sale at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona. K. won the “Best in Show” award during the American Plains Artists 22nd annual juried exhibit.
Born and raised in Oklahoma, K. Henderson now calls rural New Mexico home. Both locations have provided her with inspiration for her contemporary western themed paintings.
Her work has been in six solo museum and gallery shows and numerous group exhibitions including Smithsonian National Museum of American Indian, Salon International, Western Spirit Art Show & Sale, Cowgirl Up! Show and Sale, C.M. Russell Museum Benefit Auction, Pastel Society of the Southwest, Pastel Society of America, Mt. Oyster Club, American Academy of Equine Art , Museum of the Cherokee, the Five Civilized Tribes Museum and so on.
She has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine and Oklahoma Today. Her work has been in several books including “The American Indians: An Illustrated History” - Turner Publishing ,“The Biographical Directory of Native American Painters” - Dr. Patrick Lester, SIR Publications, “Talking Leaves” - Eric Veitch, Verner Bendtsen, “Cherokee Art: Historical Precedents”, University of Georgia Press
Driven by a need for excellence K. systematically studied painting, first in Tulsa and later in San Jose, California. Taken by the realism of the renaissance painters her work became tighter and began to win awards. Working successfully with oil, pencil and pastel she is now focused on oils. Her careful study of past masters blended with the culture of home; New Mexico & Oklahoma, are expressed in her detailed representational work. Since 1980 judges have awarded more than 100 Best of Show or First Place awards for K. Henderson paintings, including seven awards at the prestigious Red Earth show. She was recently awarded Best of Show at the Grand National Rodeo, Celebration of Western Art (San Francisco, California).
Just as important for an artist, collectors have taken notice and demand is brisk. Her work is primarily oil on canvas, subjects are western, equestrian and Native American portraiture.
She is a member of Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists (AWA), American Plains Artists (APA) and Single Action Shooters Society (SASS).
K. is tuned to the environment, her Studio and home are “off grid” and powered by solar energy. She lives energy efficiently will minimal impact to the environment. Her Studio is located high in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico. The 7,000 foot elevation provides cool nights while the southern latitude provides long warm days. The area is rural with real cowboys, Indians, coyotes, deer, elk and big pine trees. Cell phones don’t work and the nearest WalMart is over 50 miles.
